Claims Specialist (Property)

American National is seeking a full-time industry or building construction professional, with aptitude to organize, investigate, negotiate, and settle first-party property claims.

How you will make an impact

  • Manage moderate to serious level complexity (first-party) and Catastrophe (CAT) property claims
  • Review loss notices and complex policy forms to determine proper coverage, contact clients, investigate the facts surrounding the loss, while also complying with the Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Act, insurance laws, and regulations in all states assigned
  • Determine liability based upon the investigation and applicable liability law that includes forwarding required forms, obtaining appropriate releases, and negotiating settlements with clients or legal representatives
  • Negotiate loss settlements based on the review of facts
  • Conduct detailed phone investigations to determine liability and/or damages, obtain recorded statements, review reports, assess the appropriate method of damage inspection, and provide thorough follow-up
  • Establish and maintain proper reserves
  • Determine suitable method of inspection, assigning estimates, and vendors
  • Draft professional written correspondence regarding various aspects of the claim
  • Communicate and promote professional relationships with insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, and internal clients regarding the ongoing status of claims files
  • Review and recognize complex issues that require presentation to management, in-house counsel, defense counsel, and internal committee
  • Assist in mentoring other claims representatives
  • Conclude claims in compliance with all state rules and regulations
  • Adjudicate all aspects of the claims handling process under minimal supervision
  • Ensure compliance with state/federal regulations and requirements, provisions of policy contracts, and company standards
  • Complete ongoing continuing education to maintain active adjuster license(s) 

 
Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four (4) years claims experience (Applicable experience will be considered)
  • Currently hold an active (Rhode Island) adjuster license or interest in obtaining following date of hire (American National will incur fees associated / No out of pocket expenses

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4-year completed degree in related field (Criminal Justice, Insurance and Risk Management, Business, Communications) or equal claims/construction work experience
  • Experience handling first-party property claims
  • Working knowledge of Xactimate or comparable estimating programs
  • Understanding of statutes, case laws, and policy contracts/coverage interpretation
  • Passion to provide the highest quality of customer service
  • Effective and organized multi-tasker, with the ability to focus when items require your undivided attention for review
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong negotiation and organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively manage time and provide appropriate follow-up
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to navigate various computer programs simultaneously on dual computer monitors, while utilizing noted applications (Microsoft Office and internal systems)
