Purpose of Job

American National is seeking a Director and Actuary. This role will focus on leading a team performing complex data retrieval and manipulation, predictive modeling, machine learning, and making decisions based on these analyses.


Essential Functions

  • Works with actuarial, underwriting, claims, and other areas to understand data structures, determine data definitions, and evaluate the accuracy of data elements and metrics, providing guidance to others as needed
  • Prepare and compile complex datasets using sophisticated software code or other tools
  • Uses guidance as provided by Actuarial Standard of Practice 41 to create the appropriate documentation of projects
  • Creates new models and advances current models/processes using best practices in the industry
  • Uses statistical and business judgment to make and implement decisions based on predictive models and machine learning algorithms
  • Guides less experienced analysts in best practices of predictive modeling and machine learning


  • Attainment of Fellow of Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS). Background and years of experience may be considered in lieu of FCAS designation
  • The ability to demonstrate sufficient progress in understanding and applying basic actuarial principles is required
  • Experience with SQL, R, SAS, Python, Emblem or other model building tools is required
  • At least seven years of actuarial experience and five years of modeling experience required
  • Experience building artificial intelligence models is preferred but not required
  • Leadership experience is preferred but not required

Candidates will be considered based on experience, skill and education.  Another level may be substituted.  (Colorado residents are unable to be considered.)
