Do you have proven success in the areas of training, development, and supervision of team(s)? Do you understand the importance of fostering strong relationships, both internally and externally to achieve overall objectives? American National is seeking enthusiastic industry professionals with demonstrated work experience preferably in the field of underwriting, to lead a team of underwriters skilled in the areas of (commercial and agriculture). The ideal candidate will provide training, guidance, and support for team members, while maintaining company service standards by managing and executing operational strategy.


  • Coach and mentor a team of underwriters with various skills and position levels

  • Train and develop new and existing team members

  • Administer and monitor underwriting authority for team 

  • Actively monitor territory growth, retention, and profitability goals / Develop plans to engage the team and field force

  • Monitor and manage underwriter assignments and maintain balanced workflow to ensure underwriters are adhering to service expectations 

  • Research and draft formal responses to the Department of Insurance and/or consumer filed complaints

  • Maintain open and collaborative communication with team and agency managers in assigned territories

  • Support and / or lead special projects at the request of the Director or Vice President of Underwriting to include product enhancements, policy form or language development, reunderwriting initiatives, etc.



  • 4 year completed degree or equivalent industry work experience preferred

  • (7) years’ of Property & Casualty experience with a minimum of (3) years as a desk underwriter, preferred

  • Prior supervisory / leadership experience preferred

  • Ongoing interest in continuing education and development- INS, AU, or CPCU designations preferred

  • Must be a team-player and thrive in an open and collaborative work environment

  • Thorough understanding of insurance coverage, rules, and regulations desired

  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate corporate goals, objectives, and strategies to front line teams; while also having the ability to represent and advocate for the department when applicable

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

  • Strong focus on leading by example

  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Comfortable and confident public speaker

  • Ability to multi-task in fast paced work environment

  • Creative and innovative problem solver

  • Ability to utilize analytical skills and judgment to reach appropriate decisions on time-sensitive matters

  • Strong conflict management and resolution skills

  • Ability to travel as-needed
