Human Resources Generalist / Employee Relations Specialist

American National is seeking a HR Generalist / Employee Relations Specialist.  As a Human Resources Generalist, you will specialize in employee relations (performance management and employee development) and be a trusted advisor to leadership, HR Business Partners and employees.  Drawing on your in-depth knowledge of employment practices and policy interpretation, you will provide management with support and consultation to effectively manage employee performance and address performance matters.  You will work with a team of skilled Human Resource professionals from multiple locations across the company, who are committed to delivering an exceptional employee experience and moving our business forward.  Areas of responsibility include employee relations, performance management, policy implementation, employment law compliance, data & feedback gathering and analysis, and HR projects.


What you would do:

  • Establish credibility throughout the organization with management and the employees, as a trusted advisor who is an excellent listener and problem solver.
  • Partner with HR Business Partners and Generalists on the team to continue enhancing the service model and working closely with business leaders to solve employee issues and recommend solutions.
  • Communicate and interpret various policies, procedures, laws, standards and government regulations.
  • Respond to, investigate, and advise on employee relations issues such as employee complaints, harassment allegations, terminations, and relationship issues.
  • Maintain positive business relations with HR team members and all levels of management and employees.
  • Analyze Human Resources issues and provide advice and guidance and coaching.
  • Objectively coach employees and management through complex, difficult, and emotional issues.
  • Conduct interviews with active and exiting employees to ensure a positive employee experience and to gather important data for future trends.
  • Partner with managers to develop skills in talent management.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of HR services.
  • Stay current on recent federal, state and case law changes and monitors labor law updates for changes that affect human resources.
  • Maintain high level of visibility and approachability within the HR organization and business units, attending meetings, and learning the business.  
  • Partner with HR Centers of Excellence to understand processes, methodology, HRIS systems, in order to deliver an excellent client facing employee experience regarding internal equity, pay and benefits, as needed.
  • Provide assistance with Performance Management issues.  Provide counseling and facilitation of discussions between managers and employees, when needed
  • Complete objectives and goals, working with HR Leadership, to include various large-scale projects as assigned.


What we’re looking for:

  • Associate’s degree required; Bachelors or Masters (BS, BA or MA) in Human Resources Management preferred.
  • Minimum 1-3 years HR experience.
  • PHR/SPHR/CP/SCP Certification preferred or expected to be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Experience with an offsite / remote manager or other professional partners preferred
  • An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and a poised, professional image.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex human resource related materials and data.
  • Ability to respond effectively and efficiently to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to effectively and persuasively present ideas and decisions about human resource issues to employees and management at all levels of the company.
  • Ability to facilitate conflict resolution between different parties to reach a solution.
  • A decisive individual who possesses a strategic focus as well as an operational, implementation, and detail-oriented perspective.
  • Comfortable with data and metrics, with the ability to analyze themes and effectively put ideas into words and presentations, to help build a sound business case for ideas.
  • An intelligent and articulate individual who displays confidence and can relate to people at all levels of an organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A well-organized and self-directed individual who is "politically savvy" and a collaborative team player.
  • Ability to travel between corporate locations on average once per quarter
