Personal Lines Underwriter

The American National Underwriting Department is seeking analytical and driven individuals who possess an innate ability to effectively negotiate, for a full-time, personal lines underwriter position. In this position, you are given authority to authorize sound risk eligibility decisions that directly impact business. You will also be instrumental in the ongoing education and development of field associates, promoting their success. Responsibilities

  • Work within assigned authority and company guidelines to make sound risk selection decisions-continuously driving towards company growth, profitability, and retention objectives
  • Mentor agents to employ effective strategy to build and maintain a profitable book of business, addressing service or field underwriting challenges and providing underwriting procedure and system information, accordingly
  • Provide positive and ongoing communication with field personnel, assisting with product and coverage information, risk placement, risk mitigation, profitability, and loss ratio analysis
  • Conduct timely and thorough underwriting of all assignments in a manner that supports department goals, required file quality, and risk selection expectations 
  • Execute loss control expectations including inspection ordering- in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of state regulations 

 

Qualifications

  • Completed 4-year degree, preferred (Business, Finance, Insurance and Risk Management, Communication degrees desired)-Industry work experience will be considered in lieu of completed degree(s)
  • Work experience in business/finance, underwriting, and insurance related positions, desired
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Must have the ability to effectively negotiate, authorize sound decisions, critically analyze information, and maintain an elevated level of organization
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision
  • Deliver professional service that creates a collaborative and consultative environment
  • Possess enthusiasm to continually develop-Interest in obtaining industry designations (AINS, AU, and CPCU)
  • Flourish in a fast paced, self-driven environment
