Underwriter I (Personal Lines)

The American National Underwriting Department is seeking analytical and driven individuals who possess an innate ability to effectively negotiate, for a full-time, Underwriter (new business and renewal) position. As an Underwriter, you are given authority to make sound risk eligibility decisions that directly impact business. You will also be instrumental in the ongoing education and development of field associates, promoting success.   • Develops and maintains positive and beneficial relationships by providing continuous and clear communications with agents and clients, in a positive business manner, to develop and maintain positive and beneficial relationships.
  • Provides data and documentation regarding unacceptable agent or agency performance for the field and home office management. Provides support for all conclusions.
  • Takes ownership of their assignment to be proactive in building a growing, profitable book of business with growth through the use of data tools at their disposal, e.g., PAS Queries and common and customized reports from IS and the data warehouse.
  • Educates, coaches and trains agents on underwriting procedures, philosophy and new products.
  • Conducts continuous re-underwriting of the renewal book of business to maintain profitability.



  • Availability from 10:00am-6:30pm CST preferred 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, Industry work experience may be considered in lieu of completed degree
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Must have the ability to effectively negotiate, authorize sound decisions, critically analyze information, and maintain an elevated level of organization
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision
  • Deliver professional service that creates a collaborative and consultative environment
  • Possess enthusiasm to continually develop-Interest in obtaining industry designations (AINS, AU, and CPCU)
  • Flourish in a fast paced, self-driven environment

Salary for this position can range from $39,955 for candidates who are minimally qualified through $49,995 for more highly qualified candidates.  Candidates outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill, and education
