Purpose of Job

American National is seeking a Sr Payroll Coordinator for our Galveston, TX location with a hybrid work option.  This data-driven role works closely with several HR Teams to support designated business areas with employee information changes and other system projects. The Sr HR Coordinator will also be responsible for some payroll related tasks as well as navigating through our timekeeping system. The preferred candidate will be able to use our payroll software with accuracy and efficiency. Critical thinking and be trusted with sensitive information is of high importance. They also have great communication skills to interact with colleagues, other departments and outside vendors. To be successful as an Sr HR Coordinator you should be able to investigate and resolve issues and ensure strict compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Essential Functions


  • Coordinate processing and auditing of New Hires, Terminations and other Internal Movement in the HRIS system. Work closely with other internal/external parties to obtain data timely.
  • Creating positions and job codes.
  • Maintains appropriate employee file documentation and provides accurate documentation when requested.
  • Analyze payroll data, reports and forms for accuracy.
  • Maintain payroll database integrity and reconciliation of internal / external data.
  • Generate on demand checks for corporate and site locations.
  • Processing nonstandard payroll transactions including bonuses, deductions, other payments, applicable tax gross ups, etc.
  • Processing termination payments in accordance with various state guidelines.
  • Validating and auditing timesheets to ensure compliance and accurate payments.


Experience & Supervision



  • Bachelor’s degree in or related field or three to five years’ experience in a payroll function and/or three to five years’ experience in a Position Administration role, with at least two years of it recent.
  • A minimum of college coursework in a business, accounting, human resources, or related field.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or SHRM Certified Professional SHRM-CP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP and/or CM8 systems a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, with a high degree of accuracy and consistency required
  • Collaborative, self-driven mindset with the ability to handle quickly shifting priorities required
  • Knowledge of multi-state Tax Reporting, Wage Garnishment and Kronos timekeeping system preferred.
  • Must have multi-state payroll experience with over 5,000 plus employees.
  • Time collection experience required preferably with Kronos.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate with others both written and verbal, advanced reading and writing skills, and the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
  • Strongly desire a working knowledge of all relevant SAP Payroll and Personnel Administration (PA) module info types, wage types and transaction codes.
  • Excellent customer service skills a must with a proven ability of building good interpersonal relationships with people across the organization.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State wage and hours laws.
  • Proficient in MS Office suites (e.g. MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, dedicated to the success of the department.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Must be extremely detailed oriented with excellent analytical and organizational skills.
