Ag/Commercial Lines Underwriter III

The Commercial and/or Agriculture Underwriter manages an assigned territory or assigned agents, providing a collaborative, consultative environment to our exclusive agents to support profitable policy growth and retention.  The Underwriter III will also have a specialized expertise in a market or line of business, and be able to train and mentor others on this expertise.   

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work within assigned underwriting authority and company underwriting guidelines, to make sound risk selection decisions, and acceptable terms, conditions and pricing decisions on behalf of the company for new business applications and/or a renewal book of business that supports the company's growth, profitability and retention objectives.  
  • Monitor and manage assigned territory's monthly new business, loss ratio, and retention results. Identify, and work with the MLGA to develop a strategy to mentor agents as necessary, improve loss ratio or growth results, correct service or field underwriting quality deficiencies, and/or address competitive challenges.  
  • Execute Loss Control expectations including inspection ordering, and the appropriate and timely underwriting and execution of actions required upon completion of the inspection.
  • Reponsible for the appropriate pricing of the risk, including appropriate classification, tier, rate types, application of payroll audits, etc.
  • Develop expertise in the commercial and agriculture markets within your territory. Actively engage in workshops and meetings, and assist in helping others learn and understand.  Seek out and initiate participation in industry educational opportunities including participation in professional insurance education.
  • Understand and execute your fiduciary responsibility in regards to Coastal Management Programs, Risk Eligibility Guidelines, and Reinsurance Restrictions to protect company.
  • Identify pricing and policy language/coverage concerns in assigned territory and provide information to Actuarial and/or Research and Development.  Provide feedback for, and engage in, territory Growth and Profitability meetings.  Sell the actions and decisions to your agents.
  • Initiate and participate in productive field visits, including assisting agents with field underwriting for prospective clients, or current clients.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Previous insurance industry can be considered in lieu of bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years experience as a Commercial and Agriculture Underwriter II, or a minimum of five years of outside commercial or agriculture underwriting experience
  • Knowledge of commercial/ag insurance products, policies, coverages, guidelines, rules, regulations, and reinsurance strategies.
  • Professional presentation, with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service attitude, and demostrated skills working with customers.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast paced environment, and demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpolate data, and use this to formulate a plan or strategy.
  • Strong decision making ability, and desire to make decisions within your authority.
  • Willingness and ability  to exercise initiative within assigned authority.  
  • Can work independently, but also collaborate as team member.
