Job Posting

The associate underwriter I position is an entry-level role that supports American National agents, policyholders, and underwriters by applying risk-based analysis to underwrite and service personal lines or commercial lines of business at a policy and account level. Associate underwriters are expected to complete policy service work in a timely and accurate manner; they are held to established efficiency and quality standards. Based on limited authority, they make decisions to accept, accept with changes, reject, or refer to the underwriter and/or manager. This position could incorporate some administrative tasks at the discretion of the manager.


• Reviews referrals, determines appropriate action, and makes corrections to ratings on new and existing policies/accounts.

• Utilizes analytical thinking to decipher data and thoroughly underwrites transactions prior to processing.

• Makes decisions regarding the rating of policies/accounts and the discount eligibility by using applicable rating manuals and other resources.

• Enforces adherence to risk selection standard and makes risk selection decisions within authority limits to approve, refer, or reject on all transactions.

• Fosters collaboration and teamwork by establishing relationships with agents, CSRs, and underwriters and acts as a central point of contact for agents.

• Responds to all correspondence, including email and telephone inquiries from agents and third parties in a timely manner.

• Reviews, resolves, and corrects system errors and omissions as they occur.

• Determines reasons for premium and rate increases when contacted by agents. This information is not always readily identifiable within the policy.

• Performs accurate policy maintenance through adherence to underwriting guidelines, referral guidelines, and state specific laws and regulations.


• High school diploma.


• The position requires ability to effectively communicate with others to exchange information.

Salary for this position can range from $30,300 for candidates who are minimally qualified through $45,451 for more highly qualified candidates.  Candidates outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill, and education.”
